Bell Road Adaptive Signal Project

Depending on your commute and the times you commute, you may have noticed a difference in traffic backups along Bell Road in Glendale and Peoria and the Freeway off ramps.

In 2017, adaptive signal technology was installed at signals along Bell Road between 99th Ave. and 75th Ave. The equipment was turned on in early February 2018.

The system once installed learned the traffic patterns and in February was activated. The idea is the system will automatically adjust as traffic conditions change so there are fewer backups, a steady flow of traffic, less starting and stopping, and ultimately faster travel times.

Maricopa County published an article with more information last month. This is one of four adaptive signal projects slated for the Valley. The others are located along Bell Road in Surprise, Phoenix and Scottsdale.
